Other People’s Children – Ijeoma Okolo

Posted on 2 CommentsPosted in Family, Lifestyle, Uncategorized

A few days ago, I read an article about the safest ways for parents to create Instagram pages for their young children. However, it wasn’t the article itself that caught my attention; it was the scenario that led to it. The writer had been discussing with a friend why she thought it was a bad idea for Nigerian celebrities to have Instagram accounts for their children. She was told by her friend to mind her business; it was not in her place to dictate how to raise other people’s children. I was instinctively annoyed by that response. I instantly thought, “The day I give a friend well-meaning advice about their child and they tell me to mind my business, I […]

Hair loss after child birth.. can we talk about this please anyone? Experiences? Fixes? 😩 COMMENT 1: Take your prenatal vitamins while breastfeeding COMMENT 2: Do not over-brush your hair as it can cause further damage. Do not go for tight hairstyles such as a ponytail, cornrows, braids, hair weaves and hair rollers as they can pull and stress your hair, causing breakage. Do not use straightening treatments or chemical dyes as they make the hair brittle and dry. Use milder shampoo and conditioner. Use a detangling comb to brush your wet hair. Massage the scalp to stimulate blood circulation. Avoid using hair colors as harmful chemicals present in them can lead to excessive hair fall. Eat lots of fruits […]

Breastfeeding as a First Time Mother – Sheena Schwartz

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in babies, Lifestyle, Parents, Uncategorized

When my son was 1 week old I started going to a support group called La Leche League (LLL) and talked to other women who were in the same position as me – struggling with breastfeeding. Any issue you can think of, someone there was going through it – inverted nipples, cracked sore nipples, painful latch, low supply.  Just going back to the group each week and discussing my pain and struggles gave me the strength I needed to make it through to the next week.  I had developed a bleb on my right nipple. It basically looks like a pimple on your nipple. (Talk about painful!) Our LLL leader suggested pumping on that nipple and nursing on the other while […]

Everyday we have very interesting topics come up during our Whatsapp conversations. A few are shared here to spread the knowledge and or to continue the discussion.  Question:Good morning, Please is there anyone here who suffered dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain) before birth, did it stop after child birth or are you still experiencing it? Comment 1 : 🙋🏼…it has improved tremendously…now all I use is a hot water bottle and then I’m good to go. But before childbirth I was that girl in school who was admitted to the sick bay once a month every month because of menstrual pain…THAT bad! Comment 2 : Same. Used to leave the office and go home because of the pain. But none after. Comment […]

Eating off my plate – Martin Beeko

Ladies, let me talk to you for a minute. You know we (your husbands, fiancées, boyfriends) love you, but I want to address one troubling issue that I’m sure most men can relate to. Let’s start by painting a picture. Me: Behbeh, I’m ordering some food. What would you like? Her: I’m not hungry. I don’t want anything. The confirmation has been made very clear. Only one of us will be eating this food. I order my food and I am mentally rubbing my hands together in anticipation of my meal. I have made plans for this meal. I intend to enjoy every single bite of it myself since I have been informed that this will be a meal for […]

Five year marriage reflection by Martin Beeko

Who would have thought, the girl I found to be incredibly loud and seemingly incapable of sitting still would become my wife. We met approximately 20 years ago and and the first impression I had of her was not a good one. In hind sight, the situation may have been exacerbated by my frustration on losing a basketball game I had just been ejected from moments before she made her appearance.   I was sitting on the picnic bench in school fuming over losing a basketball game and out she comes screaming at the top of her lungs just running out of the washroom with her friends. The high pitched laughter was followed by a dagger Iike stare from me […]

The Farmers Market Last week I stumbled on this wonderful family event with Tess. The urbanbox farmers market! Not only was it located at one of my all time favorite Mmfora park (possibly the only kids park in Ghana) but also served delicious crepes for breakfast! Have you ever tried a prawn crepe? Oh my it’s orgasmic! I got some shopping done, met up with friends over breakfast and Tess had a blast running all around the park playing games.  The Urbanbox, – “buy local, eat fresh” Owned by a lovely and inspiring Ghanaian  and Ivorian couple, The Urbanbox  is an online grocery store aiming to bridge the gap between local farmers and the metropolis consumer; you and me! Everything is […]
